About Clermont-Ferrand
Clermont-Ferrand has always been an innovative city. Blaise Pascal discovered the effects of the air pressure. Its pioneers, wishing to promote industry, founded Michelin, major company in pneumatic manufacturing also involved in pneumatics for agriculture. More recently appeared Limagrain, world-known cooperative involved in cereal breeding, deep-rooted in the fertile plain of Limagne.
The city of Clermont-Ferrand is “bicephalous”. Two towns united over the centuries: the old town of Clermont which developed under the control of the bishop, and the mediaeval town of Montferrand created by the Counts of Auvergne. Pope Urban II chose Clermont in 1095 to make his blessing of the first crusade. Two prized examples of the period's sacred architecture are the Romanesque basilica of Notre-Dame-du-Port, and the unusual Gothic cathedral made of lava stone.
With the Universities and research centers, Clermont-Ferrand is at the cross-road of science, innovation, industry and agriculture; a right place for the ROBOTICS 2010 Symposium!
